During 2015, PIP Photographer Andy Murch will
travel to Sao Luis in Northeastern Brazil. The focus of
the expedition will be the daggernose shark which is listed as
critically endangered by the IUCN. As little as 10 years ago the
Daggernose shark represented roughly 25% of the shark catch in
northeastern Brazil but since that time its numbers have diminished
drastically to the point where it is seldom encountered.
Live images of this species would be of an
immediate benefit to conservation groups working to protect the
shark. With each year that passes, the chances of successfully
documenting this species grow slimmer. Therefore, it is critical that
an expedition is mounted as soon as possible in order to provide
images to interested conservation groups.
